California Proposition 65

California Proposition 65 for Packing Materials

WARNING: Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products can expose you to wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer.

Exposure to wood dust on a recurring basis can cause cancers of the nose, throat and sinuses. Avoid inhaling wood dust or use a dust mask or other safeguards for personal protection. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/wood This product may be packaged with a wood fiber material which may contain wood dust.

The larger and heavier items are shipped in a biodegradable material called excelsior. Excelsior is fine wood shavings that work well to absorb the impact of shipping, it compresses into a firm pliable barrier that surrounds any breakable item. It has a the added benefit of breaking down at a reasonably fast rate compared to other packing materials that are made of plastics.

There are several ways to repurpose excelsior. It can be used in the base of planters to reduce weight while still providing drainage. This method is also great for an easy base to floral and small plant arrangements instead of foam. Excelsior can be used to like pet bedding or donated to a local shelter. By throwing it out with the regular trash, use a biodegradable bag and the whole combination will break down quickly, not to live a lifetime in a landfill.
