How to Create the Perfect Mudroom

A mudroom is one of the unsung heroes of a smoothly-running household. If you have kids, it’s a place to keep the shoes, coats, school bags, and sports equipment corralled in one place. And if you live in a place where it ever gets snowy or muddy outside, a mudroom is indispensable! It’s the first step toward keeping your entire home clean and organized.

Give It a Welcoming Coat of Paint

If your mudroom isn’t looking its best, a fresh, welcoming coat of paint will do wonders for it! Remember, you’re going to be seeing and using your mudroom every day when you enter and exit your home, and it’s important that it’s not just a functional space—you want it to be beautiful, too!

Have Plenty of Shelving

The best mudrooms have lots of shelves to store everything you need to keep in the mudroom: hats, gloves, scarves, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, sports equipment, shoes, outdoor kids toys, and anything else you keep in your entryway area. While built-in shelving would probably be the nicest-looking and sturdiest option, if that’s not possible right now, there are plenty of inexpensive shelving options at your local home improvement store.

Install Lots of Hooks

Hooks are great for coats and jackets, your kids’ backpacks, hats, and more. Make sure to have as many hooks as you can, because you’ll need them! Even if you don’t always need lots of hooks, it’s always good for when you have guests at your house. Instead of piling all the jackets on a bed or chair somewhere, it’s nice to have a hook for each person.

Place a Door Mat Outside and Inside

Of course, ideally, your mudroom will have durable flooring that can withstand the constant tracking in of dirt and water. However, somebody’s going to have to clean that floor. Having dual doormats—one outside and one inside—can be a big help in keeping things clean. Plus, doormats can be welcoming and stylish too!

Use a Boot Tray in the Winter

In the winter, it’s all too easy to track snow and mud throughout the house. Even if you’ve trained your family to keep their coats, boots, and shoes corralled in the mudroom, snowy weather can lead to big puddles on the floor when the snow melts off their outdoor gear. That’s why boot trays are a must-have for anyone living in a cold-weather climate. And, good news: you don’t have to go with the unsightly options that you’d usually find in stores. There are beautiful (yes, beautiful!) boot trays that can add some personality and flair to your mudroom!

Give Every Family Member a Personal Area

This goes along with our earlier suggestions of having lots of shelves and hooks for storage: we recommend having a specific shelf area and a hook for each family member so they always know where to put their personal belongings. This helps keep everything organized and can save some time when there’s a rush to get out the door.
