A Guide to Buying Fitted and Flat Sheets

April 14, 2019

Do you know what to look for when buying luxury sheets? What about the difference between linen, Tencel®, and cotton fabrics when it comes to fitted and flat sheets? If you’re in the market for luxury bedding and you want to learn more, read this guide!

What’s the best fabric for luxury sheets?

Linen— Linen is a high-quality fabric woven from the fibers of the flax plant. It has been a luxury fabric ever since ancient times. It has a distinctive texture and appearance. Linen is soft to start with, but it gets even softer as you use and wash it. It feels cool to the touch—making it good for summer sheets—and has great antimicrobial properties. However, you shouldn’t get linen fitted and flat sheets unless you like the rustic appearance of wrinkles. Linen wrinkles very easily and some people find that it looks more casual than they prefer.

Tencel— Tencel® is a soft, sustainably-grown, luxurious fiber made from eucalyptus trees. It is a modern fabric (similar to rayon) that is wonderful for making fitted and flat sheets. It has a very smooth surface that is great for sensitive skin and comfortable for anyone who uses it. It’s particularly comfortable for those who tend to sweat while they’re sleeping. That’s because Tencel® absorbs moisture away from the skin and it feels cool to the touch. And finally, Tencel® holds dye very well, remaining vibrant through many washes, and it does not shrink or get misshapen in the wash.

Cotton— Cotton has been one of the most popular materials for thousands of years, used in clothing, bed linens and more. This strong, durable fabric holds up very well to frequent laundering. It feels cool to the touch and is hypoallergenic. Plus, it can be dyed into any color you can think of, from pastel to vibrant. However, cotton can be difficult to shop for. That’s because many cotton sheets are cheap and scratchy due to lower-quality construction and processes. When shopping for luxury sheets, you need to look for a brand that takes quality seriously.

Is sustainability and eco-friendliness important to you?
Some brands are more sustainable and eco-friendlier than others. If this is important to you, look for fabrics that are sourced sustainably—meaning that the company is careful about using Earth-friendly resources. That’s one of the reasons we love Bella Notte luxury linens. Bella Notte Linens uses sustainably-sourced materials and only uses non-toxic and low-impact dye processes. And, since the bed linens are carefully handmade rather than factory-made, the process of making the sheets is eco-friendly too.
